Gurugram: A 46-year-old air hostess from West Bengal has alleged that she was sexually assaulted by a staff member while on a ventilator in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Medanta Hospital in Gurugram. According to the complaint filed with the police, the incident occurred on April 6 while she was admitted for treatment. She further claimed that two nurses were present in the room during the alleged assault but did nothing to stop it.
The woman had travelled to Gurugram on March 31 to attend a training program organized by an airline company in the Darbaripur area of Sector 75. While staying at a hotel in the city, she reportedly fell ill after taking a swim in the hotel pool. Her health deteriorated, prompting her admission to Medanta Hospital on April 5.
In her police complaint, the air hostess stated that she was placed on a ventilator shortly after being admitted due to the severity of her condition. While in this vulnerable and unconscious state, she was allegedly sexually assaulted by a hospital staff member. Due to her weakened condition and dependence on life support, she was unable to resist or call for help. The complaint adds that two nurses were present in the ICU at the time but failed to intervene or report the incident.
The woman was discharged from the hospital on April 13. After returning home, she shared the incident with her husband, following which a formal complaint was lodged at the Sadar police station. A First Information Report (FIR) was registered the next day under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including those related to molestation and sexual misconduct.
The case has sparked widespread concern and outrage, especially due to the circumstances under which the alleged assault occurred. Questions have been raised regarding hospital safety protocols, the accountability of medical staff, and the protection of patients in critical care units.
Medanta Hospital Responds
In response to the complaint, Medanta Hospital released an official statement asserting that the institution is fully cooperating with the ongoing investigation. The hospital acknowledged receiving the patient’s complaint and confirmed that all necessary documentation, including CCTV footage from the time of the alleged incident, had been handed over to the authorities.
“We have been made aware of a complaint from a patient and have been fully cooperating with the investigations conducted by the relevant authorities. At this stage, no allegations have been substantiated,” the statement said.
Hospital authorities also emphasized that they are committed to maintaining the highest standards of patient care and safety, and that internal reviews are underway to ensure complete transparency.

Police Launch Investigation
Deputy Commissioner of Police (East) Gaurav confirmed that a Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been formed to look into the matter. The team is being led by Assistant Commissioner of Police (Sadar) Yashwant and is actively gathering evidence.
“The team has collected CCTV camera footage from the hospital and is questioning employees who may have interacted with the patient during her stay,” DCP Gaurav said. He added that the investigation is being conducted from all angles and, considering the sensitivity of the case, further details could not be disclosed at this stage.
As of now, no arrests have been made, and the identity of the alleged perpetrator has not been revealed. Investigators continue to examine witness testimonies, hospital duty rosters, and electronic surveillance to build a clearer picture of what occurred during the patient’s ICU stay.
The case underscores the urgent need for stricter safety measures and oversight in hospitals, particularly in high-dependency areas such as ICUs. Advocates and legal experts have called for swift action and a transparent investigation to ensure justice is served and patient rights are protected.
